Tamil Nadu Cabinet Minister S Keerthana said the state assembly has seen a shift in culture as younger politicians take office.
This transition reflects a broader demographic change within the regional government, marking a departure from the traditional political landscape of the state. As the only woman in Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's cabinet [2], Keerthana represents a new wave of leadership entering the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
During an interview with NDTV, Keerthana said the atmosphere of the legislative body is changing. She noted that the assembly, which once only saw the wearing of shirts and veshtis, now has suits [1]. This change in attire serves as a visual marker for the modernization of the assembly's internal culture.
"The young generation is coming forward to do something for the people... The assembly where once only shirts and veshtis were worn now has suits," Keerthana said [1].
At 29 years old, Keerthana is the youngest minister in the current cabinet [3]. She won the Sivakasi Assembly constituency running on a TVK ticket [2]. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for gender and age representation in the state's executive branch [2, 3].
Keerthana's observations about the influx of suits suggest that the newer generation of legislators is blending traditional political goals with a more globalized or modern professional image. This shift coincides with the leadership of Chief Minister Vijay, whose cabinet reflects a move toward younger representation.
“The assembly where once only shirts and veshtis were worn now has suits.”
The transition from traditional veshtis to suits in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly symbolizes more than a change in fashion; it indicates a shift in the political identity of the state. By appointing a 29-year-old woman as the sole female member of the cabinet, the administration is signaling a move toward a more modernized, youth-centric governance model that seeks to bridge the gap between traditional regional politics and contemporary professional standards.
