Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay announced new welfare initiatives providing free cooking-gas cylinders and expanded bus travel for women and transgender persons.
These measures aim to reduce household fuel costs and increase mobility for marginalized groups, potentially shifting the economic dynamics for millions of residents.
During a session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Vijay introduced the ‘Annapoorani Super Six’ scheme. Under this program, the state will provide three free cooking-gas cylinders per year [2] to 1.3 crore eligible families [1]. The benefit for these gas cylinders was scheduled to begin during Pongal in mid-January 2024 [3].
Beyond fuel assistance, the administration expanded the existing free bus-travel scheme. The updated policy now includes deluxe, express, and inter-district state buses [4] for women and transgender persons. This expansion broadens the scope of the original free travel initiative to include higher-tier transit options.
Chief Minister Vijay said the initiatives are intended to empower women and transgender persons by lowering the cost of living. By covering inter-district travel, the government aims to improve access to employment and education across the state.
The announcements come as part of a broader set of promises from the TVK to provide targeted social safety nets for eligible households.
