Taylor Sheridan announced that the previously planned Yellowstone spinoff titled “6666” will not be produced [1, 2].
The decision marks a rare reversal for the expansive Yellowstone franchise, which has successfully grown through multiple prequel and spin-off series. It signals a shift in Sheridan's approach to expanding the universe, prioritizing creative vision over the quantity of series.
Sheridan discussed the cancellation in an interview for the Rodeo, which was reported by several entertainment outlets this month [1, 3]. He said that the concept for the show did not fit his vision and indicated that there were creative limits to how the franchise could expand [1, 4].
Regarding the future of the project, Sheridan said, “There’s never going to be one” [1]. He further clarified his stance on the production, saying, “I would never do that” [4].
The 6666 spinoff series was originally ordered in 2021 [5]. For several years, the project remained in development, leading to expectations that it would eventually join the current roster of Yellowstone-related programming.
Despite the cancellation of this specific project, Sheridan continues to manage a vast portfolio of Western-themed content. The removal of 6666 from the production slate suggests a more selective curation of the stories told within the franchise's ecosystem.
““There’s never going to be one.””
The cancellation of '6666' suggests a strategic pivot for the Yellowstone franchise. While the brand has relied on aggressive expansion to dominate cable and streaming ratings, Sheridan's refusal to produce a project that does not align with his vision indicates a priority on brand prestige and creative control over sheer volume.
