Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), was released after being detained at a Patna police station during protests.
The detention highlights escalating tensions between the RJD and the state government over public sector employment and the treatment of student demonstrators in Bihar.
Yadav was detained at the Secretariat police station in Patna on July 25, 2024 [1]. The detention occurred during an RJD protest march toward Lok Bhavan and Raj Bhavan. He was released by July 27, 2024 [2].
The protests focused on several grievances, including the arrest of student protesters and widespread unemployment. Yadav also raised issues regarding alleged exam paper leaks and demanded accountability for the Siwan firing case [1], [3].
Following his release, Yadav maintained a strict stance regarding the state leadership. "I will not speak till the CM takes responsibility," Yadav said [3].
He further warned that the movement would not cease until the government addressed the specific demands of the protesters. "The fight will continue until the Chief Minister takes responsibility and action is taken against those who ordered the firing," Yadav said [2].
The RJD leader has called for the release of all detained students and the immediate withdrawal of cases filed against them [1]. He warned of mass agitation if these demands are not met.
“"I will not speak till the CM takes responsibility."”
The confrontation between the RJD and the Bihar government reflects a broader political struggle over youth grievances. By centering the protest on unemployment and exam leaks, Yadav is positioning the opposition to capitalize on student frustration, while the detention and subsequent release serve to amplify the visibility of these issues ahead of future electoral cycles.
