Tennessee State Rep. Justin J. Pearson (D) vowed that his side would prevail after Republican lawmakers passed a new congressional map this week.

The redistricting effort effectively dismantles Black voting power in the state by eliminating the last remaining Democratic, Black-majority district [1]. This move consolidates GOP control and alters the political landscape of the region.

According to the new map, the city of Memphis is now split into three separate congressional districts [2]. This fragmentation is designed to dilute the influence of urban voters in the Shelby County area.

Pearson said the vote to redraw the districts set the state back over 150 years [3]. He said the move was an attempt to undermine the democratic process through strategic geographic manipulation.

Republican lawmakers moved forward with the redrawing after a U.S. Supreme Court decision weakened protections provided by the Voting Rights Act [4]. The decision provided the legal opening for the GOP to pursue a map that favors their party's dominance.

Protesters gathered to yell "shame" at Tennessee lawmakers following the passage of the map [5]. Despite the protests and the legislative outcome, Pearson said he remained defiant regarding the future of the legal and political battle.

"We will win," Pearson said [6].

"We will win."

The redistricting of Tennessee represents a significant shift in the application of the Voting Rights Act following recent judicial narrowings. By splitting a concentrated urban center like Memphis into three districts, the GOP can effectively neutralize a Democratic stronghold and ensure a more reliable Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives from the state.
