Origis Energy has added 500 MW [1] of solar capacity to its Rockhound Solar complex in Ector County, West Texas.
The expansion marks a significant milestone in the state's transition toward renewable energy. By scaling the facility's output, the developer is increasing the stability and volume of clean power entering the Texas grid.
This latest phase brings the total operating capacity of the complex to nearly 1 GW [2]. The project is currently about half built, as the developer works toward a final goal of 2 GW [2] by 2029.
Located in Ector County [2], the Rockhound complex is designed as a mega-project to leverage the high solar irradiance of West Texas. The incremental rollout of capacity allows the developer to integrate power into the grid in stages, a strategy that manages technical and financial risks during construction.
Origis Energy is continuing development on the remaining portions of the site. The company aims to complete the full 2 GW [2] installation within the next three years to meet growing energy demands in the region.
The project represents one of the largest solar undertakings in the U.S., reflecting a broader trend of utility-scale renewable growth in the American Southwest.
