Rebel lawmakers from the All India Trinamool Congress have requested recognition as the "real TMC" in a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla [1].
This internal power struggle threatens the stability of the party in West Bengal by challenging the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The move by dissenting members to seek official party recognition could lead to a formal split and impact legislative representation in New Delhi.
Senior TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha reaffirmed his support for the Chief Minister on June 12, 2024 [2]. Sinha distanced himself from the Chief Minister's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, while emphasizing his commitment to the party leader.
"I stand with Didi," Sinha said [2].
"My loyalty is with Mamata Banerjee, not with Abhishek Banerjee," Sinha said [2].
Meanwhile, a group of 20 rebel MPs is planning to meet with Speaker Om Birla [1]. This meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 17, 2024, to discuss the faction's demand for the party tag [1]. The rebel group includes lawmakers such as Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia.
"We will meet the Lok Sabha speaker on Monday to seek the 'real TMC' tag," Basunia said [1].
The conflict highlights a deepening rift within the organization as different factions vie for control and identity. While some senior members like Sinha remain loyal to the Chief Minister, the coordinated effort by 20 lawmakers suggests a significant organized opposition within the party ranks [1].
“"I stand with Didi."”
The attempt by 20 MPs to claim the official party identity represents a strategic move to delegitimize the current leadership's control over the party's legal and parliamentary status. By involving the Lok Sabha Speaker, the rebels are attempting to elevate an internal party dispute into a formal parliamentary matter, which could force a legal determination on who represents the legitimate All India Trinamool Congress.
