The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department deployed two new medium helicopters during a commissioning ceremony on Saturday [1].
This expansion of the aerial fleet is intended to modernize equipment and strengthen the department's functional capabilities. The new aircraft will be utilized for critical missions including disaster rescue operations and the security of high-profile officials [2].
The ceremony took place at the Koto Flight Center in Shinkiba, Koto Ward, Tokyo [1]. The two new aircraft, designated as "Ootori 1" and "Ootori 7," bring the total number of helicopters in the aviation unit to 14 [1].
Each new helicopter can carry a maximum of 14 people [1]. Technical specifications include a hoist system on the right side capable of extending a cable approximately 90 meters [1]. This equipment allows the aircraft to lift objects weighing about 270 kilograms [1].
Superintendent General Hiroki Tsutsui addressed the unit during the event. He asked officers to recognize the noble mission of the aviation unit and to continue devoting themselves to their duties with all their heart and soul to meet the expectations and trust of the citizens and the public, Tsutsui said [1].
Flight Commander Nobuo Nishimura emphasized the importance of readiness for the unit. He said that each member will continue to accumulate training so they can demonstrate their strength when needed and strive to maintain public security from the air [1].
“The two new aircraft, designated as "Ootori 1" and "Ootori 7," bring the total number of helicopters in the aviation unit to 14.”
The addition of these medium-lift helicopters increases Tokyo's capacity for rapid response in high-density urban environments. By increasing the total fleet to 14 aircraft and introducing specialized hoisting capabilities, the Metropolitan Police Department is better equipped to handle large-scale evacuations and complex rescue operations in the event of a major earthquake or other urban disasters.
