Toyota Motor Corporation President Kenta Chika said that vehicles alone cannot recognize hazards quickly enough to ensure safe autonomous driving.
This shift in perspective highlights a move away from relying solely on onboard sensors toward a coordinated system involving road infrastructure. Such integration is viewed as essential for balancing the convenience of self-driving technology with the rigorous safety requirements needed to eliminate road fatalities.
Chika said these remarks last Saturday during a memorial ceremony for traffic-accident victims held at Seikou-ji Temple in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture [1, 2]. The event drew approximately 200 participants [2]. Seikou-ji Temple, which was established in 1970 [2], served as the backdrop for the discussion on the challenges of achieving a society with zero traffic accidents.

He said that the safety and utility of autonomous driving depend on the coordination between the vehicles and the infrastructure they navigate. By integrating external data from road sensors and communication systems, vehicles can perceive risks that are beyond the line of sight of onboard cameras or lidar.
Despite the need for infrastructure support, Chika said that existing AI-based development technologies for autonomous driving will still be utilized [2]. The goal is to combine the intelligence of the vehicle with the oversight of the road environment to create a redundant safety layer.
