Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are releasing a 4K restored theatrical re-release of The Transformers: The Movie on Sept. 17, 2026 [1].
The event marks the 40th anniversary of the original 1986 film [4]. It serves as a major milestone for the franchise, bringing a nostalgic experience to modern cinema screens with updated technology and new content.
The re-release features a newly restored 4K presentation and an all-new post-credits chapter [3]. A trailer for the event was showcased during Comic-Con 2026 [1]. Tickets for the screenings go on sale Aug. 7, 2026 [2].
While the film opens on Sept. 17, some markets will show the movie through Sept. 21, 2026 [2]. The theatrical event will play in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Germany, with more markets to be announced [5].
This theatrical return is part of a broader initiative called the “Apology Tour.” The campaign is a year-long effort by Hasbro to acknowledge the death of the character Optimus Prime, voiced by Peter Cullen, in the original movie [3].
"Transformers: The Movie is part of Hasbro's 'Apology Tour,' a year-long campaign acknowledging the death of Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) in The Transformers: The Movie," Deadline staff said [3].
"Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are bringing 'The Transformers: The Movie' back to the big screen this fall for a special 40th anniversary theatrical event featuring a newly restored 4K presentation and an all-new post-credits chapter," Iconvsicon staff said [3].
“The re-release features a newly restored 4K presentation and an all-new post-credits chapter.”
The 'Apology Tour' reflects a unique marketing strategy where Hasbro leans into the emotional trauma of its youngest audiences from 1986. By pairing a high-tech 4K restoration with a self-aware campaign about the death of Optimus Prime, the company is bridging the gap between legacy fans and new viewers through shared nostalgia and corporate irony.
