President Donald Trump said he asked FIFA to review a red-card suspension given to U.S. soccer forward Folarin Balogun.
The intervention occurred during the Qatar 2024 World Cup, where Balogun was facing a suspension that would have sidelined him for a critical knockout stage game. The lifting of the suspension allowed the striker to participate in the U.S. round-of-16 match against Belgium.
Trump said he believed the player did not deserve the penalty. "I think it should be reviewed because Balogun didn’t do anything wrong," Trump said.
Reports regarding the nature of the president's involvement vary. According to TheWrap, Trump admitted he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request the review. However, in a Bloomberg Television interview, Trump said he only thought the incident should be reviewed and had nothing to do with the final decision to reverse the red card.
FIFA's decision to lift the suspension came after the request for a review. The move ensured that one of the U.S. team's primary offensive threats remained eligible for the tournament's second knockout round. The incident highlights the intersection of political influence and international sports governance, a dynamic that often draws scrutiny from fans and officials alike.
“"I think it should be reviewed because Balogun didn’t do anything wrong."”
This event underscores the potential for high-level political pressure to influence the disciplinary decisions of international sports bodies. While FIFA maintains an independent regulatory framework, the discrepancy in accounts regarding a direct phone call between a head of state and the FIFA president suggests a level of diplomatic engagement that exceeds standard sports administration.
