President Donald Trump warned Friday that the U.S. would launch an expanded operation called “Project Freedom Plus” if peace talks with Iran fail.
The threat targets the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway between Iran and Oman. Because the region is critical for global oil shipments, any blockade or military escalation could destabilize international energy markets, and disrupt commercial shipping.
Trump said the U.S. must act because peace negotiations have stalled. The administration aims to prevent Iranian leverage over shipping and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels [1, 2].
“If the talks fail, we will launch Project Freedom Plus and will immediately begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said [3].
Project Freedom Plus would expand the scope of the earlier Project Freedom operation [1]. The president said the U.S. military is prepared for an escalation to protect national interests.
“We are loading up ships with the best ammunition,” Trump said [2].
While some reports describe the operation as an expanded escort mission [1], other accounts state the president intends to implement a full blockade if an agreement is not reached [3]. These conflicting strategies suggest a tiered response depending on the outcome of the negotiations.
Trump said the U.S. would not be intimidated by the current crisis. “Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted,” Trump said [4].
““If the talks fail, we will launch Project Freedom Plus and will immediately begin a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.””
The threat to block the Strait of Hormuz represents a significant escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions. By linking the success of diplomatic talks to the potential closure of one of the world's most vital oil chokepoints, the administration is using maximum economic and military pressure to force a final agreement. This approach risks a direct military confrontation in a region where any disruption to oil flow typically triggers a global spike in energy prices.
