Former U.S. President Donald Trump reacted Monday to a Supreme Court ruling that allows states to count mail ballots received after polls close.

The decision preserves a voting practice currently used by more than a dozen states [2]. It marks a significant legal setback for the Republican National Committee, which sought to prohibit the counting of ballots that arrive after the federal election deadline.

The Court issued a five-four decision [1] to reject the challenge. This ruling ensures that states maintaining these policies can continue to include late-arriving mail ballots in their official tallies.

Trump described the ruling as a "tremendous loss" [1], a Yahoo video report said. However, he also characterized the outcome as a "BIG WIN FOR AMERICA" [2] in a separate statement.

The case centered on the tension between state-level election administration and federal standards. By upholding the authority of states to count post-deadline ballots, the Court maintains the status quo for a significant number of jurisdictions across the country.

The Republican National Committee had argued that such practices could compromise the integrity of election results. The Court's majority disagreed, opting to leave the existing state laws intact.

"Tremendous loss"

This ruling prevents a nationwide shift toward stricter mail-in ballot deadlines, reinforcing the decentralized nature of U.S. elections. By upholding the practices of more than a dozen states, the Supreme Court has limited the ability of national political organizations to standardize ballot receipt windows through the judiciary.
