Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday that she will resign as the U.S. Director of National Intelligence [1].

The departure of the top intelligence official creates a leadership vacancy in the Trump administration's national security apparatus during a critical period of global instability.

Gabbard said she is stepping down to support her husband after his cancer diagnosis [1], [3]. Her resignation is scheduled to be effective June 30 [3].

President Donald Trump praised the outgoing official's performance in the role. "Tulsi has done an incredible job," Trump said [3].

To ensure continuity in the intelligence community, Trump named Aaron Lukas as the acting Director of National Intelligence [3]. Lukas will assume the responsibilities of the office following Gabbard's departure.

The Director of National Intelligence serves as the primary advisor to the president for intelligence matters and oversees the 18 different agencies within the U.S. Intelligence Community. This role is central to the coordination of national security strategies, and the delivery of daily briefings to the White House.

The resignation of the DNI marks a significant shift in the Trump administration's intelligence leadership. By appointing Aaron Lukas as acting director, the administration maintains operational continuity, but the loss of a confirmed political appointee may lead to further scrutiny of the intelligence community's direction and leadership stability.
