Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Turkey aims to increase solidarity among regional countries rather than relying on dominant global powers for solutions [1, 2].
This shift in diplomatic rhetoric signals Turkey's intention to position itself as a central mediator and leader in regional affairs. By advocating for autonomy from external superpowers, Turkey seeks to reduce the influence of non-regional actors in Middle Eastern and Eurasian security frameworks.
Fidan detailed this vision during a series of statements provided to Al Jazeera Arabic and reported by the Anadolu Agency [1, 2]. He said the region must foster its own cooperation to maintain stability. He said, "We seek to increase solidarity between the countries of the region and we should not wait for a solution from dominant powers" [1].
The minister also addressed the precarious nature of security in the Gulf. He said that attacks targeting Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain put the lives of civilians at risk [2]. These vulnerabilities, he said, underscore the need for a collective regional defense and diplomatic strategy that does not depend solely on foreign intervention.
Fidan further touched upon the broader geopolitical tensions involving Iran. He said that no one desires the resumption of a U.S.-Israeli war against Iran [2]. This comment highlights the fragility of the current peace and the potential for catastrophic escalation if regional diplomacy fails to provide a sustainable alternative to military confrontation.
Throughout his remarks, Fidan said that the path to lasting peace requires a transition from dependency to interdependence among neighboring states. He said that regional problems are best understood and solved by those living within the affected geographies [1, 2].
“We seek to increase solidarity between the countries of the region and we should not wait for a solution from dominant powers”
Fidan's statements reflect a broader Turkish foreign policy trend toward 'strategic autonomy.' By urging regional neighbors to distrust the reliability of global superpowers, Turkey is attempting to build a multilateral bloc where it can exercise significant influence. This approach aims to mitigate the risks of being caught in the crossfire of US-Iran or US-China tensions while asserting Turkey's role as a stabilizing force in the Middle East.
