The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) released a video showing AMMK MLA Kamaraj S. signing a letter of support for party leader Vijay.
The dispute occurs as TVK seeks the 118 MLAs [1] required to form a majority government in Tamil Nadu. The outcome of this struggle for support will determine which coalition or party can claim leadership of the state.
AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran countered the video by alleging the document was a product of forgery. Dhinakaran said the letter supporting TVK is a case of "horse trading" and forgery. He said that Kamaraj S. remains loyal to the NDA and AIADMK.
To reinforce his position, Dhinakaran met with the Governor at Lok Bhavan, the Governor's residence, accompanied by MLA Kamaraj. This meeting served as a public rebuttal to the TVK's claims of a shift in loyalty.
TVK representatives have maintained that the video evidence confirms the MLA's support. A TVK spokesperson said Kamaraj backed Vijay in the letter.
The conflict highlights the precarious nature of government formation in the region, where single-member parties can hold significant leverage. AMMK currently has one MLA-elect [2], Kamaraj, making his allegiance a focal point for parties attempting to reach the majority threshold.
“"the letter supporting TVK is a case of 'horse trading' and forgery."”
The clash between TVK and AMMK illustrates the intense competition for individual legislative seats in Tamil Nadu's fragmented political landscape. Because TVK is striving to reach a specific numerical threshold for a majority, the authenticity of a single MLA's support becomes a high-stakes legal and political battle. The use of video evidence and immediate counter-meetings with the Governor suggests a strategy of rapid public perception management to prevent further defection or 'horse-trading' during the government formation process.
