The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has ruled out granting cabinet positions to rebel members of the AIADMK party [1].
This decision follows warnings from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Viduthalai Chakravarthi Kazhagam (VCK), who cautioned against such appointments. The move highlights the internal friction TVK faces while attempting to stabilize a post-election coalition in Tamil Nadu.
Following the assembly election results in May 2026, the party led by actor-politician Vijay has been navigating complex alliance calculations. While TVK has extended invites to its allies, it explicitly rejected the possibility of including AIADMK rebels in the cabinet [1], [3].
Reports on the party's broader relationship with the AIADMK remain contradictory. Some sources said that AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami has entered discussions to support TVK in forming a government [2]. Other reports said that TVK has ruled out any such talks and that no alliance discussions are currently underway [3].
Among the coalition partners, the Congress party remains TVK's largest ally, holding five seats in the assembly [3]. The tension between maintaining the support of ideological allies like the CPM, and the practical need for a legislative majority, continues to shape the government's formation process.
Earlier this month, reports on May 5 indicated that TVK and AIADMK were in talks as Vijay sought majority support [2]. However, the recent clarification regarding cabinet berths suggests a priority on satisfying existing coalition partners over accommodating defectors from the AIADMK.
“TVK has ruled out granting cabinet positions to rebel members of the AIADMK party”
The TVK's refusal to appoint AIADMK rebels indicates a strategic choice to prioritize the stability of its current coalition over the short-term gain of absorbing defectors. By adhering to the warnings of the CPM and VCK, Vijay is signaling that his party will not alienate its core ideological partners to secure a majority, even as contradictory reports persist regarding a broader deal with the AIADMK leadership.
