Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) condemned a social media post by DMK MP A. Raja that targeted political allies joining the state cabinet [1].
The dispute highlights growing tensions within Tamil Nadu's political alliances as parties navigate power-sharing agreements and public perceptions of political loyalty.
A. Raja used a "bent coconut tree" analogy in a tweet aimed at the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) [1]. Both parties had recently joined the state cabinet, a move that prompted the remark [2].
TVK responded by calling the comment the "height of incivility" [2]. The party said the DMK displayed arrogance and a lack of respect for the collaborative nature of power-sharing in the region [1].
This friction is not isolated to TVK. On May 8, 2024 [3], Congress MP Manickam Tagore addressed the conduct of the DMK. Tagore said, "Irresponsible DMK spokespersons need to be mindful of their language" [3].
The TVK statement was issued on May 22, 2024 [2]. The party said the rhetoric used by Raja undermines the stability of political partnerships in Tamil Nadu, a sentiment echoed by other coalition members who have previously questioned the DMK's communication style [1].
“height of incivility”
The clash reflects a volatile atmosphere in Tamil Nadu politics where the DMK's dominant position often leads to friction with its smaller coalition partners. By defending the VCK and IUML, TVK is positioning itself as a defender of political propriety and a critic of the DMK's internal hegemony.
