The Tamil Nadu Kazhagam (TVK) said it will form the state government on its own without needing a coalition partner.

The claim marks a potential disruption of the long-standing political dominance of the DMK and AIADMK parties in Tamil Nadu. If the party of actor Thalapathy Vijay secures a majority, it would represent a historic shift in the region's power structure.

Vote counting began on May 4, 2026 [2] for 234 assembly seats [2], following elections held on April 23, 2026 [1]. TVK spokesperson Felix Gerald said the party is confident in its ability to govern independently.

"We are forming our own govt," Gerald said [3].

Gerald said the party's success was due to the leadership of Vijay and the trust voters placed in him. He said the current trends were expected by the party from the start of the campaign. According to some reports, TVK trends were reported as 100+ in its historic debut [1].

"The work behind this is nothing but our leader. People had trust in him... The trend was expected by us. We had been saying from day one that TVK will form the Govt and we will become the single largest party," Gerald said [4].

The party believes its surge is a result of voter fatigue with the incumbent political establishment. Gerald said that people were fed up with both AIADMK and DMK and wanted a change, stating that "the change is TVK and our leader" [4].

While TVK leadership dismisses the need for alliances, some reports indicate uncertainty regarding whether a coalition with the DMK or AIADMK might still be necessary to secure a functional majority [1].

"We are forming our own govt"

The emergence of TVK as a potential single-party majority challenger signals a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's bipolar political landscape. For decades, the state has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK; a successful independent government led by a cinematic icon like Vijay would validate the trend of celebrity-driven political movements in India and could marginalize established party machineries.
