The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) have extended unconditional support to Vijay's Tamilga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
This alliance provides the critical legislative numbers needed for TVK to form a stable state government in Tamil Nadu. By securing the backing of the left parties and the VCK alliance, the party has moved within reach of the majority required to govern.
TVK emerged as the single largest party following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election held on April 23, 2024, winning 108 seats [1]. However, the party remained 10 seats short of the 118-seat threshold required for a majority [1].
The support from the CPI and CPI(M) includes two MLAs from each party [2]. This addition, combined with the VCK alliance, allows TVK to cross the majority mark and paves the way for the party to lead the state [3].
"Only Vijay's TVK has the chance to form a government in Tamil Nadu," M.A. Baby said [4].
The parties are expected to hold a joint press conference in Chennai to formalize the arrangement [3]. The move is intended to pressure the Governor to invite TVK to form the government based on its position as the largest party and its newly secured majority [1].
This development follows reports in early May 2024 that the left parties were weighing their options to ensure a stable administration in the region [1].
“Only Vijay's TVK has the chance to form a government in Tamil Nadu.”
The shift toward an unconditional alliance with left-wing parties indicates a strategic consolidation of power to prevent a hung assembly. By bridging the 10-seat gap to the 118-seat majority, TVK transforms from a plurality leader into a viable government-forming entity, significantly limiting the Governor's discretion in choosing the next Chief Minister.
