Supporters of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) celebrated in Chennai on May 8, 2026, after allied parties pledged support for the party's government.
This development clears the path for TVK to form a majority government in Tamil Nadu. By securing the backing of several key political entities, the party now possesses the legislative numbers required to govern the state.
Crowds gathered outside the Viduthalai Chalaigal Katchi (VCK) office on a Chennai street to burst crackers and raise slogans [1, 2]. The celebrations followed the announcement that the VCK, along with the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and the Congress party, had extended unconditional support to TVK [1, 5].
This coalition provides the necessary stability for TVK to meet the governor for an oath-taking ceremony. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a party or coalition must secure 118 MLAs to achieve a majority [7].
"We are extending our unconditional support to TVK for a stable government in Tamil Nadu," a VCK leader said [6].
"Victory," a top TVK leader said [6].
The move comes as the state prepares for the transition of power. While some early reports indicated uncertainty regarding the VCK's position, subsequent confirmations from multiple sources established the alliance [1, 5]. The coordinated support from the Left and Congress ensures that TVK can move forward with the government formation process without the risk of a hung assembly.
“"We are extending our unconditional support to TVK for a stable government in Tamil Nadu,"”
The unconditional support from the VCK, Congress, and Left parties transforms TVK from a party with potential influence into a viable government. By bridging the gap to the 118-seat majority threshold, this alliance prevents a prolonged political stalemate and signals a strategic consolidation of non-BJP and non-DMK forces behind Thalapathy Vijay's leadership.
