The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party has threatened a mass resignation of its lawmakers if the Governor invites rival parties to form the government.

This move creates a high-stakes deadlock in Tamil Nadu, as the TVK claims the right to lead the state after emerging as the single-largest party. A mass resignation would likely trigger a constitutional crisis and could force new elections in the region.

The TVK, led by actor Vijay, won 108 seats [1] during the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election held April 23, 2024 [3]. The party asserts that its position as the largest group in the assembly entitles it to be invited by the Governor to form the state government.

Sources said that the TVK is prepared to have 107 of its MLAs resign [2] if the Governor instead invites the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M.K. Stalin, or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

The party's strategy aims to pressure the Governor against bypassing Vijay's leadership. While the TVK secured 108 seats [1], two of those seats were won by Vijay personally [2]. The threat of a coordinated exit by 107 members is intended to signal that any government formed without the TVK would lack sufficient legislative stability.

The political atmosphere remains tense as the Governor weighs the options for government formation. The TVK said that ignoring the mandate of the single-largest party undermines the democratic results of the April 2024 vote [3].

TVK threatened to resign all 107 of its MLAs if either the DMK or the AIADMK is invited by the Governor.

The threat of mass resignations by the TVK transforms a standard government formation process into a potential constitutional crisis. By leveraging its status as the single-largest party, the TVK is attempting to prevent the DMK and AIADMK from forming a coalition government. If the Governor ignores the TVK and the resignations proceed, the resulting vacuum in the Legislative Assembly could lead to President's rule or an immediate call for fresh elections.
