TVK chief Vijay met with Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi Arlekar on Wednesday to stake a claim to form the state government [1, 2].
The meeting occurs as the state faces a political deadlock following the 2026 assembly election results. Vijay's ability to secure a majority will determine whether the TVK can lead the government or if the state will face further instability.
Vijay visited the Governor's residence, known as Raj Bhavan in Chennai, to discuss the numbers game currently stalling the formation of the administration [1, 2]. Despite the efforts to form a government, reports indicate that Vijay is short of a majority by five MLAs [3].
Parallel to these political negotiations, the security-protocol convoy previously assigned to Vijay was withdrawn [4]. This action follows a delay in his swearing-in ceremony, which has left his official status in limbo.
Officials said that the security protocol was removed because the swearing-in was delayed and Vijay requested the removal of the convoy [4]. The withdrawal of these security measures highlights the precarious nature of his current standing as he attempts to finalize the necessary legislative support to take office [1, 4].
Vijay continues to engage with the Governor to resolve the shortfall in his numbers and establish a viable coalition, or majority, to govern Tamil Nadu [1, 2].
“Vijay is currently short of a majority by five MLAs”
The withdrawal of security protocols and the five-member shortfall in the legislative majority indicate a fragile transition of power. Vijay's inability to immediately prove a majority suggests that the TVK may need to negotiate with smaller parties or face a stalemate, leaving the state's leadership uncertain during a critical post-election period.
