Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is working to secure a majority government in Tamil Nadu following the May 7, 2026, election results.

The outcome represents a significant shift in the state's political landscape, as a new party is now positioned to lead the administration through strategic coalition building.

TVK won 108 seats [1] in the 234-member [1] Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. This total falls 10 seats short of the 117 [1] required for an absolute majority. To bridge this gap, the Indian National Congress has pledged support from its five-seat [1] bloc.

Despite the pledged support from Congress, TVK remains below the majority threshold. The party has shifted its MLAs to a hotel as it seeks time to meet with the governor to discuss government formation. This move comes as the party negotiates with smaller groups to finalize its numbers.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said TVK's Vijay can prove a majority by securing external support without forming an alliance [2].

Questions remain regarding the role of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). While some reports suggest the AIADMK could become a key partner and reshape the electoral landscape, the party has publicly ruled out support for TVK [2].

VS Babu, a TVK MLA-elect from Kolathur, said he credits party chief Vijay and a local connection for the historic victory [2].

TVK's Vijay can prove a majority by securing external support without forming an alliance.

The current arithmetic suggests that while TVK is the largest single party, it cannot govern alone. By securing the Congress bloc, Vijay has reduced his deficit, but the public refusal of the AIADMK to join the coalition means TVK must rely on a fragmented collection of smaller parties or external support to maintain stability in the assembly.
