Ukrainian meteorologists forecast a retreat of the current heat wave on Friday, July 3, bringing thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds across most regions [1, 2].
The sudden shift in weather patterns poses a risk to infrastructure and agriculture as the country transitions from extreme heat to unstable atmospheric conditions.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center (УГМЦ) said a powerful atmospheric front is moving across the country, bringing dangerous meteorological phenomena and a drop in temperature [1]. This front follows a period where maximum temperatures in most regions reached approximately +37 °C [3].
According to the УГМЦ, the period from July 3 to 5 will see moderate to significant rain, and thunderstorms in the majority of oblasts [2]. The agency said that hail and squalls with wind speeds of 15-20 m/s are expected on July 3 and 4 [2].
Specific warnings have been issued for several regions, including Rivne, Vinnytsia, and Dnipropetrovsk [2, 4, 5]. In Rivne, synoptics said the combination of hail, squalls, and falling temperatures is a primary concern for the region [4].
Residents are advised to prepare for the instability as the front continues its movement. The УГМЦ said the transition will be marked by a noticeable temperature decrease compared to the previous days [1].
“A powerful atmospheric front is moving across the country, bringing dangerous meteorological phenomena.”
The rapid transition from a +37 °C heat wave to a volatile atmospheric front increases the risk of flash flooding and wind damage. For a country already managing wartime infrastructure challenges, these sudden meteorological shifts can complicate logistics and emergency response efforts in affected oblasts.
