Former UN human-rights commissioner Michael Lynk said that the Palestinian people possess an inherent right to self-determination [1].
This assertion aligns with a formal recognition by the United Nations General Assembly, signaling a continued international push for Palestinian sovereignty despite ongoing regional conflict.
Lynk, who served as the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said Israel has refused to implement rulings from the International Court of Justice [1]. He said that the refusal to obey these legal decisions persists concerning the occupied territories [1].
His statements echo a specific United Nations General Assembly resolution passed on Dec. 21, 2023 [2]. That resolution formally recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to determine their own political future, and status.
Rouhi Fattouh, the head of the Palestinian National Council, said he welcomed the UN decision confirming the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination [2].
Lynk's remarks highlight the friction between international legal frameworks and the practical administration of the territories. By emphasizing the inherent nature of this right, Lynk positioned the issue as a fundamental legal entitlement rather than a subject for negotiation [1].
“Palestinians have the right to determine their own destiny”
The alignment between Michael Lynk's statements and the UN General Assembly resolution reinforces the international legal consensus on Palestinian self-determination. However, the continued refusal by Israel to implement International Court of Justice rulings suggests a significant gap between international law and geopolitical reality, potentially deepening the diplomatic isolation of the current Israeli administration regarding the occupied territories.
