Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath pitched the state as a global investment hub and a future $1 trillion economy on Tuesday [5].
The initiative seeks to deepen the strategic partnership between India and Japan. By attracting investment in semiconductors and green technology, the state aims to accelerate job creation and industrial modernization.
The UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026 began on Aug. 18 in New Delhi [6]. More than 200 Japanese CEOs, business leaders, and policymakers attended the event [2]. Adityanath said the state budget, gross state domestic product (GSDP), and per-capita income have each tripled over the past nine years [1].
To demonstrate the scale of the local market, Adityanath cited the presence of 9.6 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) [3]. He also said that Uttar Pradesh hosts more than 35,000 large industries [4]. These figures are intended to show that the state has the existing infrastructure to support massive Japanese capital inflows.
The pitch focused heavily on high-tech sectors. Adityanath said there is a need for partnerships in semiconductor manufacturing and green projects to transition the state toward a more sustainable industrial base.
The event took place as the state continues to position itself as a primary destination for foreign direct investment within India. By targeting Japanese firms, the administration hopes to leverage Japan's expertise in precision engineering and sustainable urban development.
“Uttar Pradesh is moving strongly towards a $1 trillion economy.”
This investment drive signals Uttar Pradesh's ambition to shift from an agrarian-heavy economy to a high-tech industrial powerhouse. By targeting the semiconductor and green energy sectors, the state is attempting to integrate itself into the global electronics supply chain, reducing reliance on traditional manufacturing while leveraging Japan's long-standing strategic ties with the Indian central government.
