Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar said Wednesday that the Samajwadi Party is heading for a major split [1].
The claim suggests a potential destabilization of the primary opposition in India's most populous state as parties prepare for the 2027 assembly elections [1].
Rajbhar, who also serves as the chief of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, said several leaders within the Samajwadi Party are ready to join the Bharatiya Janata Party [1]. He likened the potential situation to the recent split seen with the Shiv Sena UBT [1].
During a discussion with ANI, Rajbhar said that political developments in Uttar Pradesh have now taken center stage ahead of the 2027 [1] assembly elections. He said a letter had been sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah identifying specific leaders ready to defect [2].
"Didn't you see that Ram Gopal ji has given a letter to Amit Shah ji and told him that these are the names, call them and take them with you, but keep us safe," Rajbhar said [2].
Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party rejected these assertions [1]. Yadav said he never wrote such a letter to Amit Shah and denied that the party is facing an imminent collapse [1].
Rajbhar said the claims reflect shifting political dynamics in the region [1]. The Samajwadi Party has not provided further details regarding the internal stability of its leadership beyond the denial issued by Yadav [1].
“"The Samajwadi Party is headed for a major split, with several leaders ready to join the BJP."”
These allegations highlight the intensifying psychological warfare and strategic maneuvering typical of the lead-up to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections. While the Samajwadi Party denies internal strife, the public nature of the claim suggests an attempt by the ruling coalition to project a narrative of opposition fragility and encourage defections to the BJP.
