U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor said the strategic partnership between the United States and India is on a solid footing with incredible potential.
The remarks follow a meeting between Gor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on May 23. This diplomatic push arrives as both nations seek to deepen cooperation in defense, technology, and energy to counter regional instabilities and foster economic growth.
Gor said the relationship is growing and described the meeting with the prime minister as phenomenal. He highlighted the significant economic ties between the two nations, noting that Indian companies have invested $20.5 billion [1] in the United States.
Bilateral trade has also seen substantial growth over the last 20 years. Gor said trade has crossed the $220 billion mark [2], representing an 11-fold increase over two decades [2].
Beyond trade, the ambassador signaled a shift toward high-level energy cooperation. Gor said the U.S. is excited about big things in the India-US nuclear energy partnership [3]. This collaboration is part of a broader effort to expand technological and defense ties, which includes coordination through the Quad framework.
The diplomatic activity in New Delhi coincided with the visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio said the personal relationship between former President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi is a foundation for these strengthening ties.
Gor said the partnership is built on mutual benefits, and a shared vision for future growth. The ambassador said the current trajectory of the relationship reflects a deep commitment from both governments to sustain long-term strategic interests.
“India-US relations are on a "solid footing" and hold "incredible potential" ahead.”
The emphasis on nuclear energy and the massive surge in bilateral trade indicate that the U.S. is pivoting toward a more integrated economic and energy security architecture with India. By leveraging personal political ties and corporate investment, the two nations are attempting to create a interdependence that transcends individual administrations, positioning India as a primary strategic counterweight in Asia.
