State health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are tracking an increase in Vibrio vulnificus [1]. This bacterium thrives in warm coastal waters, and officials said that a strong El Niño has exacerbated these conditions [4].
The impact has been most severe along the Gulf Coast. Health officials said there were more than 30 infections [1] and seven fatalities [1] in that region this year. The geographic spread of the increase extends to at least two states [2], including Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay region [3].
Infections typically occur when the bacteria enter the body through broken skin or are ingested via raw shellfish [4]. Once inside the body, the bacterium can cause severe tissue damage and systemic infection.
Public health advisories suggest that individuals avoid swimming in coastal waters if they have open cuts or scrapes. Officials also said against consuming raw or undercooked shellfish to reduce the risk of ingestion [3].
While Vibrio vulnificus is naturally present in marine environments, the current environmental shifts have made the bacteria more prevalent in areas popular for recreation [4]. Health departments continue to monitor water temperatures and infection rates across the coastline.
