The outbreak has sickened more than 1,400 people [1]. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak has expanded to affect nine states [2]. Recent additions to the list of affected areas include Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania [2].

"The surge in cyclosporiasis cases is definitely abnormal and points to systemic issues in how produce moves through a highly consolidated supply chain," an infectious-disease specialist said.

Cyclospora is a parasite that typically contaminates fresh produce. While cleaning produce is a standard recommendation, experts suggest that the systemic nature of this outbreak requires a look at the broader distribution network to prevent future nationwide events.
