U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the United States-India trade agreement is in its final steps and nearing completion.

The agreement marks a significant shift in economic ties between the two nations, reflecting a deepened strategic partnership and trust between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit 2026 in Washington, D.C., Gor said the deal is close to being finalized. He said the U.S. fully expects the agreement to be signed over the next few weeks and months.

Gor said the progress is the result of roughly 18 months of negotiations [2]. According to the ambassador, the vast majority of the framework is settled, and only the last 1% of negotiations remain [1].

This trade pact follows a period of intensive diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing trade barriers and expanding economic cooperation. Gor said the current status of the deal is in its "final steps" [1].

The ambassador's comments suggest that the remaining hurdles are minimal compared to the scope of the entire agreement. The timing of the signing remains flexible, though the window is expected to be short given the current momentum of the bilateral relationship.

"Only the last one per cent of negotiations remain."

The imminent signing of this trade deal signals a transition from general diplomatic alignment to concrete economic integration. By resolving 99% of the issues after 18 months of talks, the U.S. and India are establishing a formalized trade framework that could redefine supply chains and market access in the Indo-Pacific region.
