U.S. researchers in Boston are developing commercial nuclear-fusion power generation utilizing technology developed in Japan [1, 2].

The project represents a significant effort to create a next-generation, carbon-free energy source. By mimicking the process that powers the sun, the research aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce global dependence on fossil fuels [1, 2].

During a broadcast of “Saturday Station” on Aug. 29, announcer Yutaka Yamaguchi said the effort is an attempt to create a sun on Earth [1]. The research is moving forward at a rapid pace in the United States, focusing on the potential of nuclear fusion to revolutionize energy production [1].

According to the report, the energy density of fusion is far superior to traditional fuels. Yamaguchi said that just one gram of fusion fuel can produce energy equivalent to eight tonnes of oil [1]. He said that this process produces no greenhouse gases [1].

Caster Aya Takashima questioned the feasibility of such high energy yields during the segment [1]. The research site in Boston serves as the primary hub for these developments, integrating Japanese-made components and technical expertise to stabilize and sustain the fusion reaction [1, 2].

The pursuit of fusion energy is driven by the need for a sustainable power source that does not contribute to climate change. Unlike fission, fusion does not carry the same risks of long-term radioactive waste or meltdowns, making it a primary target for international scientific collaboration [1, 2].
