Thousands of U.S. residents have been infected with a parasitic foodborne illness causing abdominal pain and diarrhea [1].

The outbreak has been ongoing for more than two months [1]. Experts suggest the contamination may have occurred earlier in the production process. Darin Detwiler said, "It seems to be related to irrigation water. This is a phenomenon that typically appears in Cyclospora food poisoning" [1].
Cyclospora is a parasite that can contaminate fresh produce through contaminated soil or water. Because the parasite is hardy and difficult to detect, identifying the exact point of failure in the supply chain often takes significant time. The current lack of a confirmed source means that other potentially contaminated products could still be reaching consumers across the country.
