These measures are critical because record summer heat and an exceptionally dry winter have pushed river temperatures to levels that can kill trout. By restricting fishing activity, agencies aim to reduce stress on fish populations already struggling to survive in warming waters.
In Colorado, the impact is widespread. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has placed restrictions on approximately 460 miles of rivers [2]. These measures vary in intensity, ranging from full closures to specific time-based bans designed to protect the ecosystem during the hottest parts of the day.
One specific example includes a voluntary fishing closure on 74 miles of the Rio Grande [2]. This restriction prohibits fishing from noon until midnight to ensure trout are not further stressed by angling activity while water temperatures peak.
