Singer Usha Mangeshkar spoke about her deep loneliness following the deaths of her elder sisters, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, in Mumbai.
The public reflection marks a poignant moment for one of India's most influential musical families, as Usha is now the remaining sister of the legendary trio.
Speaking at the 18th Newsmakers Awards 2026 [1], Mangeshkar said emotional memories of growing up with her sisters. She described the emptiness she now feels at home, noting that the loss of her siblings has left a significant void in her personal life.
"You do feel lonely," Mangeshkar said [2].
The singer's grief intensified following the recent loss of Asha Bhosle, who died at 92 [3] after a brief illness at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai [3]. The death of Asha Bhosle earlier this year followed the previous death of Lata Mangeshkar, leaving Usha to navigate her grief in the public eye.
"Now, even Ashadidi is gone," Mangeshkar said [4].
During the ceremony, Mangeshkar said the bond the three sisters shared throughout their careers in the Indian music industry. While she continues to make public appearances, she noted the difficulty of stepping out while carrying the weight of such significant personal loss.
The Mangeshkar sisters were iconic figures in Indian playback singing, shaping the sound of Bollywood for decades. Their collective influence remains a cornerstone of Indian cultural history, though Usha now carries the legacy as the sole surviving sibling of the group.
“"You do feel lonely."”
The loss of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar marks the end of an era for Indian cinema and music. As Usha Mangeshkar publicly processes this grief, it highlights the transition of a musical dynasty from active presence to historical legacy, leaving a void in the cultural fabric of the industry.
