Valve Corporation will restock the Steam Controller on its online store using a reservation queue to prevent resellers from buying all available stock.
This move addresses a persistent issue in the gaming hardware market where scalpers purchase limited inventory to flip for profit. By limiting purchase access, Valve aims to ensure that actual consumers can acquire the device at its intended retail price.
Pre-orders for the hardware are scheduled to open May 8, 2024 [1], at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT [1]. The company intends to use this specific window to manage the influx of demand and filter out automated buying bots.
"We’re limiting who can buy the controller to help genuine gamers get their hands on it," a Valve spokesperson said.
The decision follows a period of limited availability that saw the controller sell out quickly. Valve will open a new round of orders for the Steam Controller on May 8 at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT [1], according to company statements.
While the controller is returning to the store, there is conflicting information regarding the broader hardware ecosystem. Some reports indicate Valve has already received stock of an all-new Steam Controller and may release it independently of other products. However, other sources suggest a broader hardware lineup, which would include the Steam Machine, has been delayed until 2026 [2] due to issues with memory and storage [2].
Valve has not provided a specific timeline for the Steam Machine, but the immediate focus remains on the controller restock. The reservation system is designed to create a fairer distribution process for the community.

Valve's shift toward a reservation-based sales model reflects a broader industry struggle against sophisticated scalping bots. By decoupling the controller release from the potentially delayed 2026 hardware lineup, Valve is prioritizing a specific niche of its user base while managing technical hurdles in its larger hardware ambitions.
