Rescue teams freed two humpback whales entangled in fishing gear off the coast of Vancouver Island in June 2026.
These operations highlight the persistent danger that abandoned fishing equipment poses to large marine mammals in the Salish Sea region. Entanglement can restrict movement, hinder feeding, and lead to fatal injuries if not addressed by specialists.
The first rescue occurred on June 12, 2026 [3], when a whale nicknamed "Tutu" was found trapped in 150 meters of fishing gear [1]. The second operation took place on June 14, 2026 [4], involving a whale nicknamed "Astroboy" who was entangled in 140 meters of rope [2]. Both animals were successfully untangled and released back into the ocean by BC Marine Mammal Rescue and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
"The team worked for several hours to cut the gear and get the whale free; both animals are now swimming normally," Sarah McDonald, a spokesperson for BC Marine Mammal Rescue, said.
The rescue efforts required precision cutting to ensure the whales were not further harmed during the process. The gear involved in both cases was described as lost or abandoned equipment, a common hazard for wildlife in British Columbia's coastal waters.
Dr. Michael Lee, a senior scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said, "Entanglement in lost fishing gear remains a serious threat to our marine wildlife, and we are grateful for the swift response of our partners."
While some reports initially suggested the whales were freed in a single event, records indicate two distinct operations on different days. Both whales were released in stable condition after the gear was removed.

The successful release of Tutu and Astroboy underscores the critical role of specialized rescue organizations in mitigating human-caused hazards in the ocean. Because abandoned gear, often called 'ghost gear', does not degrade quickly, it continues to trap marine life indefinitely until manually removed. These incidents emphasize the ongoing need for improved gear recovery protocols and sustainable fishing practices to protect the biodiversity of the Salish Sea.
