Indian Railways launched a Vande Bharat Express premium train service between Jammu and Srinagar on March 1, 2026 [1].

The new line connects the twin capital cities of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This development is intended to enhance regional rail connectivity, support economic growth, and facilitate tourism by reducing the time required to travel across the territory.

The train consists of 20 coaches [1] and is capable of reaching a maximum permissible speed of 130 km/h [1]. Covering a distance of approximately 300 km [1], the service is estimated to complete the journey in around five hours [1].

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Vande Bharat Express will significantly reduce travel time and provide world-class comfort to passengers travelling between Jammu and Srinagar [1].

The project represents a significant infrastructure investment in the region. Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said the train is a milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, bringing the region closer to the rest of the country and boosting tourism [1].

By implementing high-speed rail capabilities, the Ministry of Railways aims to modernize transport in the mountainous terrain. The 20-coach configuration is designed to handle high passenger volumes as the region integrates further with the national rail network.

The Vande Bharat Express will significantly reduce travel time and provide world-class comfort

The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express in Jammu and Kashmir signifies a strategic shift toward high-speed infrastructure in geographically challenging areas. By reducing the travel time between the twin capitals to approximately five hours, the government is attempting to foster greater economic integration and accessibility, which may lead to increased commercial activity and a surge in domestic tourism.
