Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the Vande Bharat Express linking Jammu and Srinagar on April 30, 2024 [4].

The new service establishes the first high-speed, all-weather rail connection between the two capitals. This infrastructure is intended to boost tourism and economic integration within the region by providing a reliable alternative to road travel.

The train, identified as train number 22431 [2], runs between the Jammu Tawi railway station and the Srinagar railway station. According to official data, the travel time between the two cities is now four hours and 40 minutes [1].

"The Vande Bharat Express will reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to under five hours," Vaishnaw said [3].

To meet high passenger demand, the service was upgraded to include 20 coaches, an increase from the initial eight [3]. The expansion ensures more capacity for residents and tourists traveling through the Kashmir Valley.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the project as a significant infrastructure milestone. "This is a major step towards all-weather connectivity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Abdullah said [1].

The launch has been received positively by the public. A PTI reporter said people across Jammu and Kashmir hailed the launch as a game changer [2].

The project represents a shift toward modernizing rail transport in the region, overcoming the geographical challenges of the Himalayas to ensure year-round movement of people and goods.

"This is a major step towards all-weather connectivity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,"

The inauguration of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express marks a strategic shift in the connectivity of Jammu & Kashmir. By establishing an all-weather rail link, the government reduces the region's dependence on highways that are frequently closed due to landslides or heavy snowfall. This stability is likely to accelerate economic growth and tourism by ensuring the reliable movement of passengers and commerce between the two capitals regardless of seasonal weather patterns.
