The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) announced unconditional support for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the Tamil Nadu state government on May 9, 2024 [1, 3].
This political alliance is significant because it provides the actor-politician Vijay and his party the necessary legislative numbers to claim power in the state. The move shifts the balance of power in the region following the assembly elections.
During a meeting at the VCK party headquarters in Chennai, the party handed a written support letter to TVK General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna [1]. The VCK said that the support is unconditional to ensure the TVK can successfully form the next government [1, 2].
Reports indicate that with the addition of VCK support, the TVK has crossed the majority mark with 119 MLAs [2]. This numerical advantage is critical for the party to be invited to form the government by the governor.
This development follows the Tamil Nadu assembly election which was scheduled for April 23, 2024 [2]. While the party now seeks to form the government, some reports noted earlier setbacks, including the rejection of a TVK nomination in the Edappadi Assembly constituency [2].
The VCK leadership said the decision was made to enable the TVK to achieve a stable majority [1, 2]. The handover of the formal letter in Chennai serves as the official mechanism for the TVK to prove its strength to the state's constitutional authorities [1].
“VCK officially announced unconditional support for TVK”
The alliance between VCK and TVK represents a strategic consolidation of power that allows a relatively new political entity, led by a former cinema star, to bypass the need for a broad coalition. By securing 119 MLAs, the TVK moves from a contender to a government-in-waiting, potentially disrupting the traditional dominance of established parties in Tamil Nadu politics.
