Thol. Thirumavalavan, chief of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), announced his party will provide unconditional outside support to C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

This agreement secures the path to power for the TVK following a fragmented election result. By providing support from the outside, the VCK ensures a stable government is formed without the risk of the state falling under Governor's Rule.

The decision follows the Tamil Nadu Assembly election held on April 23, 2026 [3]. In that contest, the TVK won 108 seats [1]. Despite the strong showing, the party was initially 10 seats short of the majority mark [2].

Thirumavalavan said the VCK will not seek any cabinet positions or ministerial portfolios in exchange for its support. The party's primary objective is to avoid a political vacuum and prevent the imposition of Governor's Rule in the state [1].

Political activity centered on the VCK office in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, and Lok Bhavan, where meetings with the Governor took place to finalize the transition of power [1]. The TVK's rise to power marks a significant shift in the state's political landscape as it moves toward the swearing-in ceremony.

The VCK's move to offer support without demanding a share of power is a rare strategic choice in the region's coalition politics. By remaining outside the cabinet, the VCK maintains its independence while still influencing the stability of the administration.

VCK will give unconditional, outside support to Vijay’s TVK

The VCK's decision to offer 'outside support' allows C. Joseph Vijay to form a government despite lacking an absolute majority. By eschewing cabinet portfolios, the VCK avoids the compromises of a formal coalition while positioning itself as a kingmaker that prioritizes state stability over immediate political spoils.
