Thol Thirumavalavan, president of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), announced unconditional support for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the Tamil Nadu government.
The move is critical because it provides TVK the necessary numbers to secure a majority in the assembly, effectively averting the imposition of President's Rule in the state.
Thirumavalavan arrived at the VCK party office in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, on May 8 [1, 2]. The announcement came one day after the election results were declared for the assembly elections held on April 23, 2026 [3].
"VCK has extended its unconditional support to TVK for forming the government," Thirumavalavan said [2].
With the addition of VCK's support, the total number of seats backing TVK has reached 120 [2]. This surpasses the majority mark of 118 seats required in the 234-member Legislative Assembly [2].
The broader coalition landscape includes several smaller parties. VCK holds two seats in the assembly [3]. Other supporting entities include the IUML with two seats, the CPI with two seats, and the CPI(M) with two seats [3]. The Congress party holds five seats in the assembly [3].
Local authorities maintained a presence during the announcement to prevent unrest. "We have deployed additional police personnel outside the VCK office to ensure smooth proceedings," a senior police official said [1].
“"VCK has extended its unconditional support to TVK for forming the government."”
The VCK's decision to back TVK stabilizes a fragmented assembly by pushing the coalition over the 118-seat threshold. By securing this majority, TVK avoids a constitutional vacuum and the potential for central government intervention through President's Rule, allowing for a local administration to be sworn in.
