Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhara Vembu called for fresh elections or President's rule in Tamil Nadu this week [1, 2].

The request comes as the state faces a political impasse following the assembly election results announced May 4, 2026 [1].

Vembu said the current results do not reflect the true numbers and that the state deserves better governance. He specifically highlighted the need for a process where there is no cash for votes [2, 3].

According to the results, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, led by actor-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest formation [1]. However, the party fell short of the majority mark required to form a stable government [1, 2].

“Numbers don’t seem to add up; Tamil Nadu deserves better,” Vembu said [1].

He suggested the state should be placed under President's rule to facilitate a new voting process. “There is no cash for votes; the state should go under President’s rule and fresh polls should be held,” Vembu said [3].

The call for re-elections emphasizes the instability of the current legislative balance. While TVK holds the largest share of seats, the lack of an absolute majority creates a vacuum in leadership that Vembu believes cannot be solved through traditional coalition building [1, 2].

“Numbers don’t seem to add up; Tamil Nadu deserves better.”

The intervention by a prominent business leader like Sridhar Vembu adds external pressure to a fragile political situation. By calling for President's rule and citing 'cash-for-votes' as a systemic issue, Vembu is challenging the legitimacy of the May 4 results and pushing for a higher standard of electoral integrity in Tamil Nadu.
