Vietnamese President To Lam met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Bangkok this week to celebrate 50 years [1] of diplomatic relations.

The visit signals a strategic push by Vietnam to deepen ties with its ASEAN neighbors through high-level diplomacy and economic integration. By securing agreements in emerging technologies and green energy, both nations aim to stabilize regional security and modernize their respective economies.

President To Lam arrived in Bangkok on May 27, 2024 [2], and held official meetings on May 28, 2024 [3]. The discussions took place at the Government House, where the leaders focused on a comprehensive strategic partnership.

During the talks, the two nations signed agreements covering business, education, and regional security. The partnership will specifically target cooperation in the digital economy, innovation, and high-tech agriculture [4].

"Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to further strengthen our comprehensive strategic partnership with Thailand," To Lam said [5].

The leaders also prioritized environmental goals, focusing on the green economy and clean energy initiatives. These sectors are viewed as critical for the long-term sustainable growth of both Southeast Asian nations.

"Vietnam and Thailand will step up cooperation in potential areas such as clean energy, the digital economy, the green economy, innovation and high‑tech agriculture," To Lam said [6].

In addition to his meeting with the prime minister, To Lam met with Sophon Saram, the President of the Thai National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives [7]. These meetings underscore a multi-layered approach to diplomacy, involving both the executive and legislative branches of the Thai government.

This diplomatic milestone reflects a shift toward 'green' and 'digital' diplomacy in Southeast Asia. By diversifying their cooperation beyond traditional trade into high-tech agriculture and clean energy, Vietnam and Thailand are attempting to reduce economic volatility and strengthen their collective bargaining power within the ASEAN bloc.
