C. Joseph Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is meeting Governor R.V. Arlekar today to resolve a deadlock over forming the Tamil Nadu government.

The meeting is critical because the TVK is the single-largest party but lacks the seats necessary to govern alone. A failure to secure a stable coalition could delay the swearing-in ceremony and prolong the state's political instability.

Reports on the meeting time vary, with NDTV citing 4:30 p.m. [8] and other outlets reporting 6:00 p.m. [9]. This follows previous discussions held on Wednesday and Thursday.

To form a government, a party or coalition must reach the majority mark of 118 seats [3]. The TVK won between 100+ [1] and 108 seats [2]. This leaves Vijay short of a majority by approximately 10 seats [1].

To bridge this gap, the TVK is seeking support from several partners. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) have each provided support with two seats [7, 8]. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also provides two seats [5].

Relations with the Congress party remain strained. While Congress holds five seats that could support the TVK [4], the party is currently protesting its exclusion from coalition talks. A Congress spokesperson said, "no apologies" [10].

Some analysts suggest the current support from the CPI, CPM, and VCK brings the total signatures to the required 118 [11]. However, other reports indicate that even with Congress support, the TVK would only reach 113 seats [1]. A political analyst from the Hindustan Times said, "Vijay finally has the numbers to stake claim" [12].

"no apologies"

The current deadlock highlights the fragile nature of the new mandate in Tamil Nadu. While Vijay's TVK has emerged as a dominant force, its inability to secure a clear majority makes it dependent on smaller leftist parties and a disgruntled Congress. The outcome of today's meeting with Governor Arlekar will determine if the state moves toward a stable coalition or faces a protracted period of political bargaining.
