The Central Board of Film Certification granted an ‘A’ certificate to the film Jana Nayagan on Thursday, July 9 [1, 2].
The certification marks the end of a lengthy regulatory struggle that delayed the film's debut. Because an ‘A’ rating restricts the movie to adult audiences, the decision impacts the film's potential viewership and box office strategy.
Directed by H Vinoth and starring Thalapathy Vijay, the film finally cleared censor formalities after a seven-month battle [3]. The movie is now slated for a theatrical release on July 24 [1].
According to the CBFC's official website, the film has a total runtime of 183 minutes, or three hours and three minutes [5]. A spokesperson for the CBFC said, "Jana Nayagan has been granted an ‘A’ certificate by the CBFC" [1].
The production originally scheduled the film for release on Jan. 9, coinciding with the Pongal festival [4]. However, the project faced a delay of approximately seven months while awaiting clearance from the board [3].
Industry reports indicate the film is now prepared for its Indian theatrical debut. NDTV said that Jana Nayagan gets an ‘A’ certificate from the Censor Board ahead of its theatrical release [2].
“Jana Nayagan has been granted an ‘A’ certificate by the CBFC.”
The 'A' rating suggests the film contains mature content that the CBFC deemed unsuitable for minors, which may limit its reach among family audiences. However, the resolution of the seven-month certification deadlock allows the production to finally monetize the project after missing a key holiday window in January.
