Vijay said that the government will not compromise on the linguistic rights of the state. He described the Tamil language as a lifeline for the people of the region and emphasized that the anthem should not be secondary to other songs [1].
"Tamil is our lifeline; the Tamil anthem must hold top priority in the state and we will not compromise on the state's linguistic rights," Vijay said [2].
The move comes as the central government has pushed for the prioritization of Vande Mataram at official events. This creates a conflict in protocol regarding which song takes precedence and where they are placed in the order of ceremony.
In a filing to the Madras High Court, a representative of the Union Government said there is no requirement to perform Tamil Thai Vazhthu last [3]. This suggests a legal disagreement over whether the state anthem must conclude an event or lead it.
Vijay linked the preservation of the language to a fundamental identity. He said that the mother tongue is as pure as one's mother [1].
