C. Joseph Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), took the oath of office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday [1].

The transition marks a historic shift in the state's political landscape. For decades, Tamil Nadu has been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK parties, and the rise of the TVK-led government disrupts this long-standing duopoly.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium [2]. Alongside the new Chief Minister, nine senior TVK leaders were sworn in as cabinet ministers to form the first TVK-led government in the state [1].

TVK secured 117 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly [3]. While this fell just short of the 118-MLA majority threshold [3], the party was able to form the government with the support of allied parties.

During the proceedings, Vijay addressed the public regarding his vision for the administration. "I will not deceive people with false promises," Vijay said [4].

The new administration faces the immediate task of consolidating its power base and managing its coalition partners to maintain stability in the Assembly. The ceremony served as a formal commencement of a new political era for the region, shifting the center of power away from the traditional Dravidian parties that have controlled the state for generations.

"I will not deceive people with false promises."

The ascent of C. Joseph Vijay and the TVK represents a significant realignment of power in Tamil Nadu. By breaking the decades-long hold of the DMK and AIADMK, the TVK has introduced a third major force into the state's governance. The party's reliance on allies to meet the 118-seat majority mark indicates that while the TVK is the dominant partner, its legislative agenda will likely require ongoing negotiation with coalition partners to avoid a government collapse.
