C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in Chennai on Sunday.
The inauguration marks the first time the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has led a state government. The transition follows a period of strong electoral performance and the formation of post-poll alliances to secure a majority.
During the ceremony, nine TVK MLAs took their oaths as ministers [1]. Including Vijay, the initial cabinet consists of 10 members [2]. This maiden cabinet includes leaders from the TVK, as well as representatives from the Congress party [2].
Vijay signaled a shift in policy priorities immediately following the ceremony. He signed his first official orders, which include a promise of 200 free electricity units [3].
“New era of social justice starts now,” Vijay said [4].
The event in Chennai served as the formal start of the TVK administration. The new government is expected to move forward with a floor test to solidify its legislative standing after the poll results.
““New era of social justice starts now.””
The ascent of C Joseph Vijay to the chief ministership represents a significant disruption in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. By forming a coalition that includes Congress and other partners, the TVK is attempting to translate cinematic and populist appeal into a stable governing majority. The immediate focus on subsidies, such as free electricity, suggests a governance strategy rooted in direct social welfare to consolidate support early in the term.
